Living in a new rental at El Centro Apartments & Bungalows in Hollywood has many perks. There’s the food, the shopping, the easy access to nature, and, of course, the sunshine. But one of the coolest perks of living in Hollywood is having instant access to the arts and culture that only great cities can offer. Frieze, the visionary London-based culture and arts magazine, will be taking over the nearby Paramount lot on February 15 -17 to put on Frieze Los Angeles, an art fair showcasing 70 of the best artists and galleries operating in LA and beyond. It’s a cultural avalanche that will satisfy the most ravenous of art fanatics and give visitors access to one of Hollywood’s most iconic landmarks, the Paramount lot. What’s more, the artists and exhibits included in the fair will be displayed in a custom-made structure designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY, making the grounds of the exhibition a work of art in itself.
Frieze Los Angeles will include a wide range of artists, stretching across multiple styles and disciplines. You can marvel at the playful, ordered chaos in the sculpture of Shirazeh Houshiary. Or take in the work of Gajin Fujita, whose paintings that combine graffiti and iconic Japanese woodblock iconography feel about as “LA” as you can get. In fact, part of the joy of Frieze Los Angeles will be the ability to experience visionary talent presenting work that feels like a love letter to the city, including Lisa Anne Auerbach’s winking take on psychic readings, which merges “two professions into one—psychic advisor and art advisor,” and sculptor Mark A. Rodriguez's wall-mounted rack containing 2,800 Grateful Dead cassette tapes.
This is just a small sampling of the artistic smorgasbord available at Frieze Los Angeles. We couldn’t include the many other noteworthy performances, video installations, movement pieces, and found art that will be on display. But, no matter your tastes, there’s truly something for everyone, and it’s an amazing opportunity to experience a global offering of talent and culture. Not to mention that, for those living in one of the Hollywood homes at El Centro, it’s all just a few blocks away.
Tickets for Frieze Los Angeles are on sale now.
